New Extension Takes On .MOBI

A new extension has been announced. The .TEL extension will launch in early December 2008. This extension could cause harm to .MOBI. It will be interesting to see how this extension will be adopted and used in comparison to .MOBI. The main idea behind the .TEL extension is:
- Integration of any and all means of communication (i.e. Phone numbers, IM, VOIP, email, social media)
- Real time publishing of your contact information on the Internet
- Full ownership of your published data
- Protection of your private data, only viewable by people you authorize
- Simple structured navigation to easily reach the most relevant information
- High speed global access optimized for mobile devices
- Multi-language, search engine-friendly structured information and keywords
This new sponsored top level domain (sTLD) was recently announced at the ICANN meeting in Paris. Sunrise applications will start to be accepted on December 3, 2008. Landrush will open on February 3, 2009 and close on March 23, 2009. General public registration will open on March 24, 2009.
More information can be found on the Telnic website. Telnic is a UK based registry operator found in 2000.

Thanks for covering our announcement. We believe that .tel will sit harmoniously with all existing top level domains from .com through to .mobi, as it provides a discovery platform for those websites dependent on the device the person is accessing the .tel through – if they’re on a PC, they’ll want to visit the .com site, if they’re on a mobile device, they’ll want to visit the .mobi site. What’s important for us is the delivery and discoverability of the contact information – whether it be web content or contact details – so that people have a choice of ways to communicate. This is the goal of .tel, not mapping domain names to IP addresses to deliver web content.
Thanks again,
Justin Hayward
