Future For Domaining?

with 4 comments

The future for domains is not looking to bright, in my opinion. Nothing has really turned any heads over the past year. If you take a look 4-5 years ago, there were so many different events going on within the world of domains. New extensions were on the rise… remember .mobi? Just think about how many companies you .mobi for their mobile website. The answer? Close to none, from what I’ve seen. That had to be one of the biggest flops.  I’d like your feedback as well to see what you think!

  1. .mobi is at the right time to explode next to the .com. The mobile is your next PC, even better.

  2. I think the person that says .mobi is about to explode must be the same person who has a bunch of .mobi domains in their portfolio.

If an extension as easy and intuitive as .biz has not taken off I don’t believe any reasonable argument can be made for a .mobi especially considering major domains use the m. sub-domain to represent their mobile sites.

  3. For me, it doesn’t make sense to use a 4 letter domain extension to identify URLs for mobile version, while (as Jim said) major domains are using m. subdomain for the mobile sites (1 letter in subdomain). If SEO efforts are considered, then makes more sense to use the same domain for desktop and mobile versions.
